Exercise your way to speedier recovery

We all know the benefits of a physically-active lifestyle, but because of our sedentary habits and hectic jobs, a lot of us fail to lead a healthy life. It is only when things get worse that we are prompted to healthy living.

But how many of us know that exercise is one of the most important things when it comes to prevention of cancer. Most of us exercise to prevent heart diseases or obesity, but exercising during the treatment of cancer can play a key role in recovery as well!Remember, most cancers are caused by lifestyle reasons and not genes.

How does exercise help?

Besides improving the quality of life, some studies have shown that exercise can help in speeding up recovery post the treatment of cancer. When you are going through this difficult phase of treatment, exercising can help reduce stress and give you the much needed energy.

Lifting your mood

It has been found in one of the studies that four out of 10 women remain depressed almost a year after their diagnosis. While another study points out women who had breast cancer are less likely to be anxious or depressed if they manage to exercisefor at least half an hour four times in a week. Hence, it is advised that women should startexercising soon after the treatmentgets over for a speedier recovery.

Fighting fatigue

You should know that moderate exercise doesn’t have any effects on cancer patients and the fact is that those who exercise are less fatigued. With exercise,you can improve muscle strength, joint flexibility and general conditioning, because these get severely impacted during surgery or therapies. With exercise, your mind and body also get uplifted and helpfight depression that you could be facing because of the diagnosis.

It is not advisable to gain weight during or after the treatment, as studies have found that people gaining weight are more prone to recurrence of cancer. Hence, it is important to keep fit and exercise to keep away from the deadly disease.

Breast cancer

Majority of studies have found that women exercising have a 30 percent to 40 percent lower risk of breast cancer. Basically,female hormone estrogen plays a key role here. So, women with high estrogen levels in their blood are prone to higher risk of breast cancer. But exercising lowers blood estrogen which, in turn, will help reduce the risk of cancer in women. Therefore, women with breast cancer should go for upper body training, but remember to do these exercises slowly.

It’s best to take opinion from a therapist, who works closely with cancer patients, and who can design an exercise program for you if needed. For example, women can exerciseto improve the range of motion and prevent lymphedema, a chronic arm swelling that could result from lymph node removal in breast cancer patients.

But don’t go overboard because you have just recovered from the disease which would have already taken a toll on you. Start with moderate-intensity activities such as brisk walking and then gradually increase the intensity.

Not all cancers are preventive, but in recent times with advance research, countries globally have been able to find ways to prevent this disease. Exercise is one of the ways to lower risks of several cancers. So, better take to exercising than fretting over your genes.
